Tasting notes:

A deep purple core with a crimson rim transforms to garnet with time in bottle. A compote of dark berries is complimented by fresh fennel, dried bay leaves and cardamom. The fine tannins of the Cabernet Sauvignon surround a core of pure Shiraz fruit. A dense palate is composed of a multitude of dark berries, cherries and plums. The delightfully long finish only adds to the pleasure.

The 2020 Anaperenna Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon pours an iridescent magenta in the glass. On the nose, there are layers of sweet vanilla oak, raspberries at the height of the season, fresh licorice root, star anise, fresh cut fennel and cracked black peppercorns. In the mouth, the wine is silky, full-bodied and unfurling – the quality of the fruit sourcing shines through as the flavors linger on the finish. There’s a brightness and energy here that I have found in many of the 2020 reds from Barossa (which is interesting, given the continuation of low yields and drought conditions, suggesting perhaps clever, adaptive viticulture at the fore). There’s a friskiness that suggests a decant would be highly advisable. This is a ripper of a wine.

A polished, glossy rendition of the great Australian blend from Ben Glaetzer. Wonderfully pure blackberry and plum fruits with a touch of blueberry lift, melding with deep spice, licorice, Old Jamaica chocolate and earth. Cedary oak flows in on the palate before retreating back into the fruit which shines brightly throughout. Tannins are gravelly and long and there is a sense of freshness to its form. Self assured and wonderfully pure drinking.

Aromas of red and black cherry, leather, bark and black licorice. Full-bodied with silky tannins. Rich and opulent on the palate, with very good concentration and intensity. Well structured and needs a bit more time to come together. Best after 2024.
